Hitomi joined Northern Light Theatre’s (NLT) board in 2017.  She is currently serving as Vice President but has also served as Secretary as well as Chair of the Human Resources Committee.

She has over two decades of work in social research with the federal, provincial, and local governments; academic projects; think tanks; and non-profit organizations.  Her areas of emphasis are in contracts, finance, grievances, law, policy, procedures and surveys.

In her non-work hours, she dedicates at least 20 hours a week sitting on various boards and volunteering for arts organizations.  She has extensive Board and Volunteer management experience with festivals and non-profit organizations from across Canada.  She enjoys contributing to NLT through the development of organizational documents and policies.

During her free time or on holidays, Hitomi loves culture, food and travel.  Her adventures have taken her to international Habitat for Humanity builds; judging and volunteering for international food contests; and exploring new cultures.  Her recent voyages have taken her to Australia, Cuba, El Salvador, New Zealand, Peru and Singapore.

Here are the most important things you should know about Chris.

  1. If she makes a commitment to do something, she will do it.
  2. She joined the NLT board because she believes in their mandate and embraces the belief that space for difficult conversations needs to be nurtured within community art settings.
  3. She loves to read.
  4. During the day, she works for AHS in addictions and mental health. During the night, she watches programs on Netflix, current fav: Lucifer; all-time fav: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  5. She thinks that this upcoming season featuring women of a certain age (of which she is too) is going to be fabulous and that you should come to one or all of the plays.

Jamie Kannekens

After attending many NLT functions and shows Jamie decided to get involved at the board level. She has been a member since 2019 and is chair of the venue committee.  This is a new experience for Jamie, as it is her first time being on a board and she is learning a great deal from all the other members.

Jamie has been passionate about supporting the Edmonton arts and culture scene for several years.

Jamie has worked in the inner city for over 10 years providing support to persons experiencing homelessness through a housing first program.

Joy has been a member of the Northern Light Theatre (NLT) Board since 2018. She brings her long-time passion for live theatre, including years of volunteer experience, to the Board and is thrilled to serve as its current Treasurer.

Joy was born in Guyana, South America and moved to Canada at a young age. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CMA).  Joy works as a finance director with the Alberta Government.

In addition to promoting live theatre, Joy enjoys writing (she is a published author of a book of poetry and several articles), Toastmasters and travel.

Janet has been a member of the NLT board since 2015 and is chair of the fundraising committee. She has been a theatre lover for years and enjoys working with NLT to promote thought provoking theatre in Edmonton. She brings experience with other non profit boards to the NLT board.

She is a psychiatrist who works in a private practice and with an inner city clinic provided housing first support to persons with mental illness.

David Lardner

Member

David is a Union Representative with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees where he has attended before professional boards, the Alberta Labour Board, and arbitration panels since 2007. Prior to that, David worked as a lawyer in private practice in the areas of family law and civil litigation.

David holds a B.A. and an LL.B. from the University of Alberta and is a member of the Alberta Bar.
