BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT

Battle for the Limelight Origins

Northern Light Theatre is very conscious of our position in the Edmonton community to promote and encourage a vibrant and diverse arts scene.    The company had plans for an “Amazing Race” like fundraiser on the back burner for a few years, but the event was missing an essential spark of engagement to make it viable.   That spark was ignited by the inspiration to make Battle for the Limelight a not-for-profit community fundraising event which could potentially benefit many arts organizations that were facing the same fiscal challenges as Northern Light Theatre.   The uniqueness of this fundraiser was that each participating team alongside Northern Light Theatre would be able to raise donations for the charity of their choice in the forms of pledges to run in the race.

In our inaugural year, Northern Light Theatre’s board undertook planning the event for the beginning of September 2014 with a route along the retail district of Whyte Avenue.  We reached out to business partners to host pit stops, undertook devising clues and challenges, as well as hosting a post-race Bar-B-Que celebration and community event.  We invited theatres companies and other not-for-profit arts organizations to participate by registering teams.  There was a modest registration fee meant to cover some of the expenses of the race - food costs for the bar-b-que, hall rental and supplies required for the various challenges.  The remainder of the overhead costs were covered by a private donation made to NLT for the event.    13 arts groups registered and we estimate that over $20,0000.00 was raised in combined pledges for the arts organizations that participated.  It was so successful and the response by participating teams and businesses so overwhelming positive we knew it needed to become an annual event.

BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT

NLT’s Second Annual Battle for the Limelight took place the last week of August 2015 along 124th Street and nearly doubled in size with 25 registered teams, as many not-for-profit groups embraced it as a fundraiser that could benefit them.   Long established theatre companies such as The Citadel Theatre, Edmonton Opera, Teatro la Quindicina, Rapid Fire Theatre and NEXTFEST to emerging companies such as Thou Art Here, Toy Guns Dance Company and Moplip Theatre all competed in the race.   With such an increased level of engagement the number of challenges, partnering businesses and volunteers required for the race also needed to grow.    This required considerably more work and resources on the part of NLT’s board and staff to organize.

We were so fortunate with our partnerships along 124th street.  The race had three different heats, so teams would not all arrive at the same venue at once, and we tried to keep the race itself within 3 hours.   It was a great day and very successful and challenging race.  On the race day itself, The Battle for the Limelight trended on social media across Canada on both facebook and twitter.   The evening wrapped with a Bar-B-Que and dance hosted by NLT, which turned out to be one of the greatest social and community gathering amongst Edmonton artists outside of the Mayor’s Evening for the Arts, and Sterling Awards.   A video with highlights of the 2015 race are available to view on NLT’s website at www.northernlighttheatre.com.

We are Pleased to Announce our 2016-2017 Season!

Northern Light Theatre unveils its 41st anniversary season of producing challenging, exciting, dynamic and controversial works of live performance.  Riddled with untimely death, apprehension, anxiety and family secrets, the season will feature three plays – including two world premieres- that showcase what NLT does best: creating theatre with language rich texts that are dark, poetic, funny and which reflect a complex world and lead us to question our hierarchy of values.

SISTER, SISTER

by Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich

PCL Studio in the ATB Financial Arts Barns (10330 84 Avenue)

I’ll be honest. I’m doing well. Really well. But I’m not gonna pay one cent for her God damn funeral. Call the city. They’ll come, take the body, dump it in the ground before lunch. No charge.”

For Dirdra and Janice, Mom’s dead and it’s a great day. There’s going to be a celebration, and hopefully nothing will go flying out the window – including one of them. A viciously comic and tense fifteen-year reunion between two sisters on the day of their mother’s unforgettable death. Featuring Louise Lambert and Arielle Rombough.   World premiere.

Anxiety

ANXIETY

created by THEATRE YES, Northern Light Theatre, Theatre Skam, Outside the March, LoHiFi Productions, Curtain Razors and Théâtre à corps perdus
November 24 - December 4, 2016       Secret Location

“Between the land of the dead and the living is a door. And the door can swing in both directions. Knock- and Mr. Splitfoot will open the door...”

Our personal, secret catalogues of small terrors can move us from the rational to the irrational in mere moments. The way we choose to deal with our fear shapes our lives and the lives of those around us. Our choices to act or not act based on our irrational need to protect ourselves can take us to the heights of joy and plunge us into the depths of despair. Theatre Yes’s ANXIETY will challenge audiences to examine these phenomena through the prismatic lens of seven newly created Canadian plays. World premiere.

BONNIE & CLYDE

The Two Person, Six-Gun Musical

Coulda lived some sixty years and straighter than an arrow, Toilin’ hard fer joy I’d never know

The infamous, depression-era bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde were considered ruthless murderers. But Bonnie and Clyde- the Two Person, Six Gun Musical examines the highly sensationalized pair from the angle of their love affair. Taking advantage of the many myths blended with historical facts, the pure fun two-person rip-roarin’ musical takes you on a fun and wild ride of romance, suspense and old-fashioned shoot-outs that tells the story of the infamous duo that led a nationwide crime spree from 1932 until 1934.
