Set in the Tudor era, the lives of Queen Elizabeth I of England and Mary, Queen of Scots are interwoven in a desperate struggle for political power. This beautifully realized production, directed by Maria Lamont with Set and Costume by Designer Camellia Koo, has never before been produced in Alberta.

In her director's statement, Maria Lamont wrote: "Donizetti is known as a singer's composer, and this is never truer to be found than in the virtuosic bel canto vocal music he created for these two remarkable women."

Sparks fly in the events leading up to Mary's execution as Donizetti's opera takes liberties with historical fact by bringing the two queens face to face (they never met), and adding more dramatic tension with inclusion of a romantic rivalry over the tenor.

The women playing these two iconic historical figures are renowned in their own right — Keri Alkema (Queen Elizabeth), is a powerful and acclaimed soprano, and Kathryn Lewek (Mary Queen of Scots), is considered the world's reigning Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Both artists, their presence, command of the stage and incredible voices, lend credibility to the explosive rivalry between these two monarchs.

The production's setting illuminates the larger theme of "art becoming life and life becoming art", as the lives of these women play out in a gallery of an old Tudor mansion, set for a contemporary exhibition of the two queens.

Don't quite feel ready to take on the experience of watching a live Opera?
Edmonton Opera offers a series of thought-provoking and informative panel discussions before each opera production. Hosted at CKUA performance space (9804 Jasper Ave., Alberta Hotel) on March 30, 2016, 7pm, this free even will provide context and perspective from the realms of history, political science, music and more.
