A CONVERSATION WITH JASON CRAIG
SPACE// SPACE was originally created and produced in 2012 by Brooklyn-based performance group Banana, Bag and Bodice. Over the next month we'll be sharing NLT's Artistic Director, Trevor Schmidt's conversation about the play with Jason Craig, Banana, Bag and Bodice's AD and playwright of SPACE// SPACE. (That's him looking distraught the below photo)
TREVOR: I know you've likely been asked this same question a million times, but...What was the first inspiration for SPACE//SPACE? Did it come from the idea of outer space… or the gender switch… or two brothers? Is this a chicken vs. egg question?
JASON: The writing impulse came from wanting to write a sci-fi type piece for myself and Jessica. Sci – fi, because I am not a huge fan of that genre and so I always find it interesting to insert my sensibilities (as a writer) onto a type that either stretches me or I can stretch it (through my ignorance). We have had this approach for all of our shows in some sense.
A couple examples…The Fall and Rise of The Rising Fallen, about a punk band…none of us had ever been in a band before, we taught ourselves how to play our instruments for the show.
Beowulf – A Thousand Years of Baggage, a musical about the epic hero…I had never read the poem, and have never gotten off on traditional "hero" types in cartoons, movies, video games.
Wanting to write a piece just for myself and Jessica came as a response to the sprawling monster that Beowulf became (touring with 17 people, a big epic etc).
The gender switch was a discovery made during the writing, but was not something that I intended to explore before I started. And then the piece became less about confinement, or space, and more about gender. Funny that.
TREVOR: How did the show change in its development over the previous incarnations? Wasn't there a third performer or voiceover at one point?
JASON: The desire to insert a third actor that kept creeping in because I think myself and Jess felt vulnerable working together by ourselves (we hadn't done that in many years) and because we really wanted to hang out with a particular friend of ours. But ultimately it all seemed forced. So we dropped it.
The comedy routines were not in the original workshops. Jess's character was strapped to an inversion chair in the first version and she sang crazy arias that were being channeled through her (which was the cause of her change). My character was very passive. I think having him become more active, yet hopeless was an interesting development.
TREVOR: Real beard or lace-front? Is one better than the other?
JASON: Oh, real.
TREVOR: What kind of work are you interested in creating? Are you working on anything now?
JASON: I am writing a fictional memoir for Jessica (editor's note: Jessica is Jason's partner and the original Penryn in SPACE// SPACE) to perform (which will most likely be entirely sung) about an old lady telling her life story. It's a quilt of sorts, taking stories from real/fictional women throughout history and weaving them in to one character. It's called Long Yarn and will premiere in Brooklyn in Jan 2016.
