BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT IS NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATIONS

Grab your rain boots, secure your umbrellas, wrap yourself in the warmest scarf, and prepare your team for whatever our Edmonton climate has to throw at them! The Fifth Annual BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT, Northern Light Theatre's legendary foot race, scavenger hunt, and fundraiser benefitting the entire Edmonton not-for-profit community returns, and this year we're changing the date. Instead of battling heat exhaustion and dehydration of the late summer sun, THE BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT is moving to the Spring, to be held on Saturday May 25, 2019.

Founded in 2014 by Northern Light Theatre, BATTLE FOR THE LIMELIGHT is the biggest and most-anticipated fundraising event of the theatre season, where over twenty-five theatre companies and not-for-profit arts organizations meet to compete for YEG glory and year-long bragging rights. Registered teams collect pledges and donations for their charity of choice - everything they raise they keep! Participants then race to Edmonton landmarks, find clues, complete challenges, solve puzzles, and battle it out in friendly competition, while celebrating the Edmonton theatre season in this fun-spirited event.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE 

  1. REGISTER! (download the Early Registration form)
    Complete the registration form and submit to gina.m@northernlighttheatre.com.
    Early Registration deadline is from October 1, 2018 – December 31, 2018: $131.25 including GST
    Registration from January 1, 2019- April 20, 2019: $210.00 including GST
    Late Registration after April 20, 2019: $315.00 including GST
    No registrations will be accepted after May 10th, 2019.
  2. PAY THE REGISTRATION FEE! (Pay your Registration fee online)
    Payment can be made by cash, credit card (Visa or MC only) or by cheque, payable to Northern Light Theatre and submitted with your registration form. OR you can pay for your registration online or over the phone at 780-471-1586.
    You only need to register your main contact person to be in race.  Your full team of four members must be submitted with your signed wavers on race day, May 25th.
  3. RECRUIT!
    Build a team.  Maximum of four people.  All players must be 18+ years of age. More than four of you want to join in the race? Register and enter more than one team!
  4. HELP SUPPORT NLT BY PROVIDING VOLUNTEERS AND RECEIVE A “SKIP A CHALLENGE PASS” TO USE IN THE RACE.  – An event with many moving parts, NLT is trying to recruit 60 volunteers and could use your help.
  5. FILL OUT FORMS! (download the Waiver and Release form)
    Each team member must complete the “waiver and release” form before the commencement of the race on May 25th, 2019.  (Save time and submit your forms early to gina.m@northernlighttheatre.com)
  6. PROVIDE NLT with your company Logo and a photo so we can profile your team on NLT’s Battle for the Limelight Race Page.
  7. FUNDRAISE! (download Pledge form)
    Every cent you raise is yours to keep. Your company will be responsible for issuing your own charitable tax receipts to your donors. (We recommend setting up donations through your own website or on Canada Helps, and take advantage of annual campaigns such as Giving Tuesday in November, and Canada Gives in June.)
  8. RACE!
    Show up to our secret location in Old Strathcona (to be announced) on May 25th ready to battle it out!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need a vehicle to participate in the race?
    No, but for the first time we will not disallow the use of a vehicle. However, your full team must check in at each pit stop, otherwise you may end up with penalties on your final score.
  2. Is there a cost for the Post Race Party?
    The food is included as part of the registration fee. There will also be a cash bar. We welcome guests to our postrace party. If you have company members that you would like to join in the fun at our post-race celebration, we ask that they consider making a donation at the door to go towards their food.
  3. Why is the event restricted to 18+?
    The nature of certain events and challenges is not suitable for minors. As well, certain locations/pit-stops require an 18+ clientele by law.
  4. How long will the race take?
    The duration of the race is dependent on the speed of your team, but it has been designed to have a maximum running time of 3 hours.
  5. What about weather?
    The race will take place rain or shine! Contingencies are in place for less than stellar weather conditions. However, teams will still be required to travel from one location to the next, so dress for the weather! And remember sunscreen – even if it looks cloudy.
  6. Do I need to be an athlete to participate?
    Absolutely not! We use the term "race" lightly. It's meant to be fun and taken only as seriously as you decide to take it. There's plenty of room for competitive spirit, but you don't need to be a marathon runner to partake. (In fact there will challenges where speediness will not be an asset…)
  7. Social Media
    At least one member of your team will need a fully charged smart phone for the race to receive clues, hints and make posts to social media throughout the race. (An iPhone is better to communicate with the race organizers, but not necessary). This event has trended on social media across Canada, so be sure to get out there and promote your own company too. Get your donors to follow you on the day of the race. The more you post the more points you may receive.
  8. What kind of activities can I expect?
    We take the feedback from our participating teams every year, so we continually try to shake things up and make the race a great adventure and a lot of fun. Some challenges might involve food (but no 100 year old eggs, we promise!). And remember, if your team simply cannot do the challenge, there will be buy outs - some challenges will be $20.00 a team per or $5.00 per team member– so we advise having cash on hand! There are no penalties for a buy-out.
  9. Why is there a registration fee?
    The registration fee offsets the costs NLT incurs to create and host the event, and actually only covers 50% of our overhead costs to put on Battle.
  10. Help to provide volunteers!
    To run smoothly the race needs two volunteers for each pit stop! Last year we recruited over 50 volunteers. Please get the word out amongst your volunteers for this event. Provide NLT with volunteers and receive a SKIP A CHALLENGE PASS for your team to use in the race!
