2018-2019 Season

At Northern Light Theatre we feel that we fill a unique role as an outspoken, purposefully-controversial and boundary-pushing company.  The content of our productions are brave and emotionally-driven.  It is our desire not only to entertain, but to spark meaningful discourse on the themes raised in our productions, and to engage our audience to take part in that discussion.    To that purpose, we are pleased to bring back our Salon-Styled events for a fourth season, facilitating productive and intelligent conversation and debate.

Lebogang Disele – Salon Facilitator for THE CARDIAC SHADOW

Lebogang is a PhD student at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. She is graduate of the University of Cape Town (BA Film and Media Production [Radio], BA Honours [Drama]), as well as the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (MA Dramatic Arts) – both in South Africa.

Her focus in theatre and performance includes dance, acting, directing and more recently, dramaturgy. She hails from Botswana where she is focused on growing her company, The LC Performance Lab, through which she has produced three performances to date. Recent performance credits include What (Black) Life Requires, at the Mile Zero Sesquicentennial Party curated by Bridget Jessome, the Mile Zero Dirt Buffet curated by Mpoe Mogale and at the 2017 Expanse Festival, In the Shadow of Blessings at Alchemy II curated by Brandon Wint and Unwoven at the 2018 SkirtsAfire Festival, curated by Nasra Adem. Lebo was also a co-dramaturge for David Kennedy’s adaptation of The Lower Depths.

As an academic, Lebo is interested in work that explores issues of marginalisation, discrimination, prejudice, and oppression, especially in relation to gender. Her other major research interest is documenting Botswana theatre and performance. Her publications include “In Conversation: Interrogating and Shifting Societal Perceptions of Women in Botswana through Theatre” in African Theatre 14: Contemporary Women; as well as “Searching for a Place: Identity and Displacement at the Maitisong Festival” in a special edition of Pula: Botswana Journal of African Studies and “Towards Sustainability in the Theatre: A look at The Company@Maitisong” in Botswana Notes and Records.

Lebo's research title is "Decoloniality, Feminism(s) & Performance in Southern Africa: in search of a new women’s movement(s)". She is interested in how performance can be used to foster women's leadership by inserting women's experiences into the public archive.
