To launch each new theatre season Northern Light Theatre hosts the Battle for the Limelight- a city-wide fundraiser in which arts groups collect pledges and compete in a scavenger hunt to win gold (and bragging rights for the rest of the year). By staging a battle, Northern Light Theatre hopes to win the war on arts fundraising by giving every theatre group the chance to raise pledges without having to mount their own campaign. No matter who walks away with the trophies- every theatre company wins.
The second annual Battle for the Limelight was held on Saturday, August 29, 2015.
Twenty five teams of four players (that’s 100 participants!) each gathered at End of Steel Park where they were soon flabbergasted to find that the race would not take place in Old Strathcona (as it had last year) but instead the entire race was to take place on 124th Street, High Street and the Glenora/ Westmount communities. Once contestants had bussed across the river, the mad dash was on with challenges that included folding a stranger’s laundry, drinking spicy barbeque sauce, dressing up as Marilyn Monroe, trading paper clips, and taking photos of local landmarks.
Congrats to all of the teams! We are so delighted that all 100 participants competed this crazy challenge and partied with us! What a way to kick off the 2015-2016 theatre season!
A full scale event with many moving parts, people and locations, NLT needs a lot of sponsors, donors, funders, volunteers and supplies to make Battle for the Limelight happen every year. Northern Light Theatre accepts donations for Battle year-round.
Theatre Alberta had so much fun participating in the first year of Northern Light Theatre’s Battle for the Limelight that we entered two teams in 2015!...
NLT has really exemplified our community’s best features in the design and execution of Battle for the Limelight – the event has nationally reinforced why Edmonton is the greatest city in Canada to be a theatre artist and a theatre patron.
Keri Mitchell, Executive Director Theatre Alberta
Thank you for allowing us to be part of Battle for the Limelight 2015. We would love to be a part this year again as it promoted our growing business through social media and exposed us to a whole new audience as the event trended throughout Canada! We were able to develop our own creative challenge (dress up as one of our characters and log yourself at the store on social media) that was fun for the competition but also added valuable cross promotion, free advertising and exposure of our location and what we offer in our boutique. It was such a fun way to be part of the business and theatre community in Edmonton. What a success for all involved!

This event has been beneficial to our city’s community of theatre artists in myrad ways. Not only does it bring us all together in a spirit of fun and shared creativity, while collectedly raising our public profiles it also provides us with an invaluable fundraising opportunity.

The Battle for the Limelight made us sweaty, short of breath, and left us with spicy lips. The race was pretty exciting too. Thanks for all your work putting together this unique, community-building event. What a great way to get out in the sun with all our colleagues and raise money for another great season of theatre in Edmonton. We look forward to next year!
